The one part of a sunrise session nobody thinks about until 5am.
Sunrise photography has a hard deadline: the light. Unlike a sunset session, where a few minutes of delay just means slightly different color in the sky, a late arrival at sunrise can mean missing the best light of the entire session. Knowing exactly where you're headed and where you'll park removes the single biggest source of morning stress.
Big Beach's main lot is your best bet before sunrise.
Makena State Park (locally known as Big Beach) has a large public parking lot at its northern entrance. During the day this lot fills quickly and a parking fee applies, but arriving before sunrise means you'll typically find the lot close to empty and quiet. From the lot, it's a short, flat walk through a sandy path to the beach itself -- easy even in the low light of pre-dawn.

Smaller, closer, and even easier for an early start.
For sessions along the Wailea Beach Path -- Ulua, Mokapu, Wailea and Polo Beaches -- each access point has its own small dedicated parking area, generally far less crowded than Makena's main lot. These fill up later in the morning with regular beachgoers and beach-path walkers, so a sunrise arrival almost always means an open spot within steps of the sand.
Small details that make a big difference before dawn.
Bring a phone flashlight for the short walk from car to beach -- pre-dawn paths are unlit. Wear sandals you can slip off, since sand is cool (not hot) at this hour. And build in a small buffer: even five extra minutes of margin means you're calm, composed and ready when the light turns, rather than rushing straight into your first frames.

Is there parking at Makena Beach for an early sunrise session?
Yes. Makena State Park (Big Beach) has a public lot that is far emptier before sunrise than during the day, and Wailea's beach parks each have small dedicated lots that fill up much later in the morning.
How early should I arrive for a sunrise photo session?
Plan to arrive 10 to 15 minutes before your scheduled start time to find parking, walk to the beach, and settle in before the light becomes usable.
Do I need to pay for parking at Maui beach parks?
Most South Maui public beach parking lots, including Makena State Park and Wailea's beach paths, are free. Some lots have posted hours; your photographer will confirm exact meeting details ahead of your session.
