Whale Watching in Maui

Every winter, thousands of humpback whales return to Maui's warm waters. Here is when to go, which boats and tours are worth your morning, and where to watch for free.

WHALE SEASON

From November through April, the humpbacks are here, and February is the month to beat.

WHEN TO GO

The Season, Month by Month

Humpbacks travel to Hawaii each winter, and the sanctuary that protects them says visitors can see them from shore and at sea from November through April. Numbers build through January, peak from mid-January through March, and February is usually the most active month.

If your dates are flexible, aim for February or March. If you are visiting in late fall or in April, you can still see whales, but expect fewer of them and book a tour that offers a repeat trip if you come up empty.

One rule for every boatFederal law requires vessels to stay at least 100 yards from humpback whales. If a captain promises to get you much closer, choose a different captain.

OUR SOUTH MAUI PICK

Kai Kanani from Maluaka Beach

If you are staying in Wailea or Makena, we recommend Kai Kanani. The catamaran loads directly from Maluaka Beach, so there is no harbor drive, and the sailing charter keeps the group small with good viewing at the bow and along the sides. Snacks and drinks are included.

Maluaka is one of the beaches we know best. We photograph families, couples and weddings along this shoreline all year, and starting a whale morning from the same sand is a lovely way to see it from the water.

Good to knowBecause boarding takes place from the beach through shallow surf, wear something you do not mind getting wet. Our catamaran guide has more on choosing your day on the water.

QUICK ANSWERS

What to know before you go.

When is whale watching season in Maui?

Humpbacks can be seen from roughly November through April. Numbers peak from mid-January through March, and February is usually the busiest month.

How close can boats get to humpback whales?

Federal rules require boats to stay at least 100 yards from humpback whales. Reputable operators follow this and use naturalists to explain what you are seeing.

Where do Maui whale watching boats depart from?

Most large boats leave from Maalaea Harbor, Lahaina Harbor or Kaanapali Beach. Rafts depart from Kihei, and Kai Kanani loads directly from Maluaka Beach in Makena. Maalaea is about a twenty-minute drive from Wailea.

Is a raft or a large catamaran better for whale watching?

Large catamarans are steadier, with restrooms and shade, and suit families and anyone prone to seasickness. Rafts are faster and sit closer to the water, but the ride is bumpier.

What if we do not see a whale?

Many operators offer a guaranteed sighting, meaning a free return trip if no whale appears. The terms differ from company to company, so read the policy before you book.
